Rockford Auburn, the great unknown heading into the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, announced its arrival with a blistering 68-40 win over St. Viator Monday in Hillside.

The unbeaten Knights forced the No. 23 Lions into 24 turnovers and led by 30 in the fourth quarter, setting Proviso West’s running clock blowout rule into motion.

Rockford Auburn (10-0) starts five seniors and plays a tenacious full court defense. Expect the Knights to mount a serious challenge for the tournament title. They will face the winner of the Homewood-Flossmoor vs. St. Rita game in the second round on Tuesday.

Nylek Cobb led the way with 24 points and six rebounds. Antoine Pittman added 14 and Alonte Bjorlie (five steals) and Laytwan Porter (four steals) keyed the defense.

Patrick McNamara led St. Viator (7-2) with 17 points. He shot 4 for 8 from three-point range. McNamara made three in the first four minutes, then the Knights started marking him.

Sal Cannella added 10 points and guard Mark Falotico scored 21 for the Lions.
