Proviso West: Maine South survives Uplift

Maine South didn’t display the discipline that’s become the hallmark of the program Monday at the Proviso West Tournament, but the Hawks still managed to get a 53-48 win over Uplift in Hillside.

The Hawks (9-1) built a 43-31 lead after three quarters but saw it evaporate in a flurry of fourth quarter turnovers. The Hawks finished with 23 turnovers in the game and coughed the ball up on six consecutive fourth quarter possessions. Uplift’s Spencer Foley (24 points, six rebounds) tied the game with a free throw with 1:41 to play.

That was the end of Uplift’s offense. Maine South scored the final four points to seal the win.

George Sargeant led the Hawks 21 points and 11 rebounds. Maine South dominated the boards, out-rebounding Uplift 39-24 thanks in large part to guard Nick Ruben (14 rebounds).

Jeremy Roscoe scored nine points for Uplift (9-2) and Daniel Suetan added eight.

Maine South will face the winner of the Stevenson-New Trier game in the second round on Tuesday.
