Chicago man gets 80 years for fatal 2009 shooting

A Chicago man was sentenced to 80 years in prison Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a rival gang member in October 2009.

Martell Hill, 31, shot Jamar Taylor 12 times on Oct. 25, 2009 as he sat in his car in the 3900 block of West Grenshaw, according to a statement from Cook County State’s Attorney.

Taylor, 26, was shot eight times in the head and four times in the chest, the statement said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the shooting, Hill “casually walked away from the scene,” according to the statement.

Nearly a year after the shooting, several witnesses came forward and identified Hill as the gunman, prosecutors said.

Hill was convicted by a jury for the fatal shooting of Taylor. Cook County Judge Angela Petrone handed down the 80-year sentence Tuesday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building.
