Two cats were killed in high rise fire that was mostly contained to a single apartment in the Old Town neighborhood Sunday evening.

The fire broke out in the apartment of an elderly couple who live on an upper floor of the 24-story building at 1540 N. LaSalle, according to a source. The fire spread through the apartment about 5 p.m. and was extinguished minutes after the man who lived there frantically asked a neighbor to dial 911. Aside from the dead cats, no one was injured in the fire.

The fire was accidentally started, stemming from a furnace problem, Fire Media Affairs said.
