Driver cited in crash that hurt two officers on Northwest Side

Two Chicago Police officers were seriously hurt in a crash involving a squad car late Saturday night in the Northwest Side Portage Park neighborhood.

A driver involved in the crash–whose gender or age wasn’t known Sunday night–was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, police said.

The officers were in a police SUV heading eastbound on Irving Park with their emergency lights and sirens on when they were struck by a car heading southbound on Melvina at 11:55 p.m., police said. The officers were responding to assist another officer when the crash happened.

The SUV struck a light pole before stopping, police said.

The male officers were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, police said. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the car was taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection in good condition, police said.
