Benet locks down Bloom

PONTIAC, IL — Bloom scored two baskets in the first quarter, Benet managed four. And it didn’t get much better from there. The Redwings pulled out a 43-33 win in the first round of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Monday.

“We didn’t shoot particularly well,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “But I credit their defense for that. We played well enough to win.”

Colin Bonnett and James Dockery each scored eight points for Benet (7-2). The Redwings shot 18 for 44 in the game.

Bloom trailed by just seven points after three quarters but remained cold in the final eight minutes, managing just two baskets.

Rodney Hayes led the Blazing Trojans (4-5) with 12 points and Octavein Johnson added eight.

Benet will face Curie in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
