A woman is suing the Jewel chain of supermarkets after she allegedly contracted salmonella from deli meat she purchased at a southwest suburban store earlier this year.

Janet Dominik filed the suit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court in which she alleges deli meat purchased from a Tinley Park Jewel last May led her to contract Salmonella.

On May 9, after eating food she bought from the deli, Dominik experienced nausea, diarrhea, fever, fatigue, muscle pain and abdominal cramps, the suit stated.

“[Dominik’s] consumption of the contaminated food caused her to become infected by Salmonella,” the suit stated.

Dominik alleges that at least 15 other people contracted salmonella after eating food purchased at the deli from the Jewel at 171st and Harlem. Dominik’s is at least the second lawsuit filed against Jewel over the outbreak.

The suit claims the Cook County Health Department was notified on June 14 about a salmonella outbreak linked to the store’s deli. The store temporarily closed the deli that same day, according to the suit.

“As of today, Jewel-Osco has not seen the lawsuit referenced and therefore are unable to comment on the specific details,” according to a statement issued Wednesday by Jewel-Osco.

“The health and safety of our customers and the wholesomeness of the foods we sell is our highest priority and we work hard to ensure it every day.”

The two-count suit alleges negligence and product liability and seeks an undisclosed amount in damages.
