Last year, Phillips made it to the state quarterfinals in football, the furthest the school had ever gone in the playoffs. That was the team’s first taste of success. This year’s team is different. Phillips entered the season with expectations to win it all.

No Chicago Public School team has ever won a state championship in football. Entering this season only one had ever made it to the state final. So as Phillips prepared for a state semifinal game against Coal City, it was not just playing for itself; Wendell Phillips was playing for an entire city.
