Jay Feely trying to make most of time with Bears

Veteran kicker Jay Feely had a tee time with former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, of all people, last Tuesday in Arizona that he had to cancel.

‘‘I got the call that morning, and I texted Brian,’’ Feely said. ‘‘I said, ‘I’m not going to be able to make it, bud. I have to go kick for the Bears.’ It was kind of ironic.’’

As of Monday, Feely still was with the Bears after kicking for them Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys. Robbie Gould remained sidelined with a pulled right quadriceps.

‘‘He’s kept himself in good shape and certainly worked at it,’’ coach Marc Trestman said of Feely. ‘‘We’re lucky to have had him available to us.’’

Gould said during his weekly video with the Sun-Times that he suffered his injury last Tuesday, but he’s hopeful he can play Monday against the New Orleans Saints.

‘‘He’ll have a little more time to rest,’’ Trestman said. ‘‘Certainly optimistic, but we’ll see where he’s at. He’s really got three full days to get better.’’

In the meantime, Feely is happy to be here to help. The 14-year veteran has had workouts with four teams in the last month and a half.

Feely tried three onside kicks against the Cowboys, the second of which was recovered by tight end Dante Rosario.

‘‘That one was perfect,’’ Feely said. ‘‘I told the guys I was going hit it on the ground first and give it a hop. The third one I hit great, too.”

Marshall speaks

Receiver Brandon Marshall, who was released from the hospital Sunday, was put on injured reserve after breaking two ribs and suffering a collapsed lung against the Cowboys.

‘‘As soon as [the defender] hit me, I thought there must be some internal bleeding going on,’’

Marshall said on ESPN Radio 1000. ‘‘It was really scary, man. I’m one of those guys [who], when I hit the ground, I try to get up right away. I don’t care how tough it is.’’

Injury updates

Linebacker D.J. Williams, defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff, receiver Alshon Jeffery, safety Chris Conte and tight end Martellus Bennett didn’t participate in practice.

During the game against the Cowboys, Williams was evaluated for a concussion and Conte left with a back injury. Ratliff (knee) sat out the game, while Jeffery (hamstring) and Bennett (foot) dealt with their injuries and played.

‘‘They let me get a little extra rest, but I should be back when we come back Thursday,’’ Bennett said. ‘‘I feel pretty good, getting better every single day. Excited about playing against the Saints.’’
