The aging picture located in the west hallway at the North Campus gymnasium of former Lyons principal David Franson and relay mates Bob Nicholls, Bob Schaefer and George Coffey in 1976 contains two mistakes, according to Franson.

Franson, who ran the relay leg, said Schaefer’s name is misspelled, with an extra “f”.

The picture does not mention the relay, but even though the time listed is 3:17.6 , it’s the two-mile, Franson said.

It was LT’s two-mile relay that clocked the second-fastest time (7:38.3) in the country that year while taking runner-up to Thornton’s 7:37.97 — the best in the nation. Rockford East crossed third in 7:39.0.

The 100th Illinois state meet program called it the greatest relay race ever held in the Illinois state track meet.

“That is an inaccuracy. If I was any kind of a principal, I would have fixed that,” Franson joked.
