Summer baseball

The Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association’s summer tournament started Monday with its eight regionals. At Prospect, Conant and Elk Grove were the big winners.

The 15th-seeded Cougars beat Bartlett 18-9 in the play-in game before upsetting No. 2 St. Charles North 6-5 to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinals against No. 10 Lake Park.

Meanwhile, the No. 13 Grenadiers also won twice Monday, beating Elgin 9-2 and No. 4 Huntley 4-1. EG plays No. 5 Jacobs on Tuesday.

No. 1 Schaumburg also moved on with its 6-3 victory over Larkin. The Saxons (19-2) face No. 8 Fremd, a 12-8 winner against No. 9 Glenbard North, on Tuesday in the quarters. No. 3 Prospect and No. 6 Hersey also advanced to play each other Tuesday.

The semifinals are Wednesday and final is at 4 p.m. Thursday at Prospect.

At Palatine’s regional, the host Pirates, seeded fourth, beat No. 13 Glenbrook South 5-0 to move on to the quarters. Palatine plays No. 9 Lane Tech on Tuesday. No. 14 Buffalo Grove and No. 16 Barrington both lost Monday.
