Lakes runs over Vernon Hills

Lakes 42, Vernon Hills 7

THE SKINNY

Vernon Hills kept Lakes off the scoreboard in the first quarter, but the Eagles (6-1, 5-0 NSC Prairie) eventually overpowered the Cougars (2-5, 2-2). Lakes had its way on the ground as Vernon Hills struggled to tackle the big, physical running backs the Eagles cycled on the field.

TURNING POINT

Late in the second quarter with Lakes up 14-0, Vernon Hills’ Connor McNamara threw an ill-advised pass that was picked off by Jake Zimmerman and returned back to the Vernon Hills 10-yard line. The Eagles scored two plays later to take a commanding lead into halftime.

THE STAR

Lakes running back Devyn Cedzilo may not have had many touches, but he made them count. He had three rushing touchdowns on six carries, including a 57-yarder early in the fourth quarter when he broke through the line and went basically untouched into the end zone.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Cougars had three turnovers, leading to 14 points for the Eagles, including a 61-yard strip and score from Thomas Dubicki in the late stages of the third quarter.

QUOTABLE

“That’s a pretty good football team. We came out and competed a little bit on defense in the beginning there, but they just overpowered us.” – Vernon Hills coach Bill Bellecomo
