Eighth-seeded Lane scored the game’s first three goals and held on to upset host and top-seeded Lyons Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Pepsi Showdown. TURNING POINT
After scoring to come within 3-1 with 22:56 remaining in the second half on senior forward Frankie Kocimski’s goal, No. 4 Lyons (6-1-2) appeared to score again two minutes later but was ruled offsides. Lyons did not score again until senior defender Emilio Godinez’s goal with 8:32 to go. THE STAR
Senior forward Jose Fuentes scored the first goal of the tournament against Lyons in three games when he drilled a right-footed blast nine minutes into the game. Fuentes scored his 15th goal of the season by piercing through the Lyons defense and was uncontested on a wide-open shot against senior keeper Peter Nolan. BY THE NUMBERS
Lane (9-1-1) became the first Public League team to reach the semifinals in the 10-year history of the Pepsi Showdown. Fuentes’ twin brother, Sergio, scored his sixth goal of the season to give Lane a 3-0 lead with 25:36 left in the second half.
