Sun-Times’ MIke Clark: Column on Powell’s struggle

Mike Powell’s enduring struggle with a life-threatening disease will be featured at 7 p.m. or at 10 p.m. Thursday on a new program on the NBCSports Network (formerly Versus). An original broadcast of the “Sports Illustrated Show” was shown Wednesday night and the program will be re-run many times over the next few days. It might be tricky, but try the Search feature on your DVR.

The program is a video version of SI reporter Chris Ballard’s piece on Powell (pictured right), the longtime Oak Park-River Forest wrestling coach, who was diagnosed with a rare muscular disease after winning the state dual team title a few years ago. The NBC cameras followed Powell on his recent trip to the London Olympic Summer Games to watch former OPRF wrester Ellis Coleman.
