Morton (26-2) prevailed in a contentious, physical match with longtime playoff rival Lyons (17-3-3) in a 1-0 victory that had several near-misses and an exciting finish.
TURNING POINT
Edgar Garcia received a pass from senior defender Alonso Fregosco on the left wing and made a brilliant cutback move against the charging Lions’ defense, which opened up a lane. Garcia’s shot skated past senior goalie Peter Nolan for the game’s lone goal with 14:08 remaining in the first half.
THE STAR
No only did Garcia register the decisive goal for the Mustangs, he also helped set up two other shots in the first half and kept the Lions’ defense on itd toes when he went on the attack with his ball-handling and quick passes.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Mustangs had a 6-5 advantage on shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks. Lions sophomore midfielder Cristian Sanchez led all players with two shots on goal.
