While teammates Jahlil Okafor, the nation’s No. 1 player, and Georgetown recruit Paul White have grabbed most of the headlines over the past three years, Wednesday was Miles Reynolds’ day as the Whitney Young senior made his college decision.
Reynolds, who was down to Saint Louis, LSU and Columbia, committed to coach Jim Crews and SLU Wednesday night.
The 6-1 combo guard believes the opportunity at Saint Louis is ideal as the Billikens will be graduating the starting backcourt of Mike McCall, a Foreman product, and Jordair Jett.
“The main reason is they have two guards graduating and there is a real opportunity to play early in my career there,” says Reynolds. “I also wanted a good academic school, and Saint Louis has great academics. So with the opportunity to play early and the academics, it’s a perfect fit for me.”
Reynolds also noted he has a “special connection” with Crews, who took over for the late Rick Majerus last season and led the Billikens to 28 wins and a NCAA Tournament berth. In addition, Reynolds is excited about working with new SLU assistant coach Calbert Cheaney, the former Indiana star and 13-year NBA veteran.
“I think coach Cheaney will really help me in developing as a player,” says Reynolds, who will be a three-year starter for the Dolphins this winter.
Reynolds joins a recruiting class that also includes 6-4 point guard Marcus Bartley of downstate Decatur MacArthur and 6-4 point guard Davell Roby of White Station High School in Memphis.
