THE SKINNY
Luther Lockwood scored three touchdowns and rushed for 120 yards as the Eagles employed a big-strike offense and opportunistic special teams in a rout on Saturday at Gately.
TURNING POINT
The Eagles (3-1, 1-0 Illini Heartland) broke the game open with three second quarter touchdowns. Lockwood’s 28-yard run set up his one-yard dive. Durrel Nash blocked a punt that Malik Scott returned 14 yards for another touchdown. Zeriam Jackson ended the barrage with a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyree Dantzler.
THE STAR
Lockwood carried the ball just nine times but broke three long runs for the Eagles. His 30-yard run down the left edge expanded the margin to 42-0 and ignited the running clock. Jackson also added a 42-yard punt return touchdown in the third quarter.
BY THE NUMBERS
Dantzler only completed three passes but they went for 114 yards, all in the first half, as Brooks used its big-play arsenal to full strength. Brooks has now outscored its last two opponents 105-0.
QUOTABLE
“Without my line blocking, I wouldn’t have gotten anything tonight. For running backs, vision is everything. I got the ball and was able to see the holes and I hit them.” — Lockwood
