Three Things To Know

1. No blemishes for Johnny Gahagan. The St. Laurence senior improved to 19-0 with his championship at the 32-team Berman Classic. Maybe more impressive was the way he won. Gahagan (138 pounds) secured four pins in four matches en route to the title after a first-round bye.

2. Francis Edelan should not be overlooked. The Oak Forest junior sits at 23-1 after conquering the 106-pound bracket at the Berman Classic. It can be easy to look past Edelan, because teammate Danny Swan is the reigning Class 2A state champ at 113. The Bengals finished second overall at Berman.

3. Joey Nelson is more than a leader. The Lincoln-Way Central senior is a stud. Nelson (132 pounds) improved to 26-1 after winning the 24-team Granite City tournament. Fellow team captain Bryce Gorman said Nelson is “one of the most laid back people you’ll ever meet” and helps keep the team loose before competition.
