Niles West’s Denis Gargovic competed in both the shot put and the discus at state last season, but it’s unclear if he’ll throw the discus during the 2014 outdoor season because of a lingering right shoulder injury.

Gargovic is scheduled to throw the shot put during the season.

Niles West coach Chris Vivone said the torquing motion used to throw the discus leads to pain in Gargovic’s shoulder.

“Our throws coach’s being really careful with him, and we don’t know what we’re going to do in the discus with Denis,” Vivone said.

Gargovic threw the discus 138 feet, 8 inches at the Class 3A state meet last season, but he didn’t advance to the finals. Gargovic heaved the shot put 54-6 at state en route to a sixth-place finish.
