Von Steuben, Curie and Washington all winners….

Von Steuben guard Mike DiNunno, a Lake Park transfer, was brilliant in his Public League debut, leading No. 11 Von Steuben to a 67-49 win over No. 21 Morgan Park Saturday in the Curie Shootout at Collins.

“I play a lot of basketball and that’s all this was,��? said DiNunno, who finished with 19 points, four assists and four rebounds. “It doesn’t matter where you play, it’s still ball.��?

Deonte Lundeen (11 points, four steals) and Michael Horton (seven points, six rebounds) rounded out Von Steuben’s “three-headed monster��? guard attack.

“It’s just our first game but we proved a lot,��? Lundeen said. “We know what people say: Michael can’t shoot, DiNunno can’t play in the Public League and I’m soft. We already showed that isn’t true.��?

The Panthers built their lead in the third quarter as Horton scored seven points in a 9-0 run that put Von Steuben ahead 47-36. Isiah Martin, Morgan Park’s 6-9 forward, scored all 11 of the Mustangs’ third quarter points. He finished with 18 points and four rebounds. The Panthers outrebounded taller Morgan Park 30-20.

“All three of our guards outrebounded there big guy,��? Von Steuben coach Vince Carter says. “Everyone says our guards are too short. They didn’t look too short today.��?

Jeremy Arrington scored 15 points for the No. 21 Mustangs (4-1) and Aaron Ragsdale added six points and six rebounds.

WASHINGTON 64, FARRAGUT 43: Sophomore Michael Haynes is fitting right in with his new teammates. Haynes, a 6-4 sophomore, transferred to Washington from Corliss over the summer.

“I’ve been hanging out with The Ticket (DeAndre Liggins) and the Smothers brothers (Keyon and Jarvis),��? Haynes said. “They’ve taught me a lot and they keep my intensity level up on the court.��?

Haynes scored 15 points, Liggins played his usual terrific all-around floor game and Keyon Smothers led the way with 20 points for the No. 7 Minutemen.

“Keyon has improved a lot since last season,��? Washington coach Ken Crump said. “He’s always played hard but now he’s starting to play smarter.��?

Washington (3-1) jumped out to a 21-8 lead and never looked back.

Junior Michael Dunigan led Farragut (0-1) with 10 points. Isiah Williams and Patrice Phipps each scored eight points for the No. 19 Admirals.
