SCORELINE: Elmwood Park 7, Guerin 0

THE SKINNY: The Elmwood Park boys soccer team thoroughly controlled possession against Guerin in their match at Elmwood Park on Thursday, and the Tigers scored five goals in the second half en route to a 7-0 victory.

TURNING POINT: Elmwood Park (2-1-1) scored its first goal of the match with 36 minutes, 28 seconds remaining in the first half when junior Tommy Akinrotimi’s cross was converted by sophomore midfielder Edwardo Fernandez. The Tigers’ victory was never in doubt after their first goal.

THE STAR: Elmwood Park’s attack overwhelmed the Gators, but nobody was more dangerous than Akinrotimi. The speedy outside midfielder set up the first goal of the match, and he also tallied two goals in the second half. Ruben Bahena, also a junior midfielder, also scored twice in the second half.

BY THE NUMBERS: The shots on goal in Thursday’s match were almost as lopsided as the 7-0 scoreline. The Tigers had 18 shots on goal, while Guerin had just two.

QUOTEABLE: “Two-0 is the worst lead in all of soccer,” Elmwood Park coach Martin Blake said. “I’ve always said, (1-0) means nothing, (two-0) is the worst lead and (3-0) you’ll suck the life out of them. After the third (goal), you could see it.”
