THE SKINNY

Nazareth and senior quarterback Jake Bartels ruined the debut of new Proviso East coach David Odom with a 35-10 nonconference victory Saturday in Maywood.

TURNING POINT

Proviso East punter Marcus Givens scrambled out of punt formation at his own 34 in the first quarter. He was tackled for an 8-yard loss and Nazareth scored first two plays later on Michael Masterson’s 1-yard TD run.

THE STAR

The 6-4, 210-pound Bartels missed four of his first five passes to begin the game but heated up in the second quarter with a pair of TD passes to Julian Love for 24 yards and Kevin Jackson for 23 yards.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Pirates rushed for minus-24 yards in the first half and had only 10 total yards of offensive. Quarterback Lawrence Griffin completed 4 of 15 passes before the half.

BREAKING IT DOWN

The beginning of the Odom era could have been worse. Proviso East whiffed on the opening kickoff, giving Nazareth possession near midfield. But the Roadrunners drove to the Proviso 15, only to end their first possession with a fumble.
