Rev. Meeks: Blacks have to shake up Democratic Party

There were two things I knew for certain about my late father.

He was going to root for the underdog. And he was going to vote Democratic.

The Democrats are for the working class, and the Republicans are for the wealthy, he would say whenever politics came up.

As simple as that logic is, it has held up over many elections.

It’s why Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn made a big show of trying to live on minimum wage for a week. It is also why his Republican challenger, Bruce Rauner, slapped an $18 watch on his wrist and portrayed himself as an ordinary Joe in campaign commercials.

But despite the generational disdain a lot of blacks have for the Republican Party, there are signs that Rauner has made important inroads.
