A new poll shows Sen. Dick Durbin (D) leading his challenger, State Sen. Jim Oberweis (R), by 23 percentage points.

The Chicago Tribune poll shows of those surveyed, 55 percent said they’d vote for Durbin, while 32 percent gave the nod to Oberweis. The poll also showed Durbin has strong support across the state.

Durbin led Oberweis in Cook County 66 percent to 22 percent. Downstate tends to skew Republican, but Durbin scored 48 percent support there compared with 39 percent for his GOP challenger. Oberweis also trailed in the collar counties, with 39 percent backing to Durbin’s 46 percent.

While 83 percent of those surveyed recognized Oberweis’ name, only 25 percent said they have a favorable opinion of him, compared to 27 percent who said they view him unfavorably. More than one-third said they have no opinion of Oberweis.

For Durbin, 97 percent said they are familiar with him, with 55 percent saying they approve of the job Durbin is doing in Washington.
