(WAUKEGAN) An Arlington Heights man was arrested last weekend after a police officer on patrol saw him open fire on an SUV in north suburban Waukegan, authorities claim.

Jose Guzman, 18, an admitted gang member, was seen about 6:15 a.m. Aug. 31 having a conversation with someone in a black SUV near Glen Rock Avenue and Jackson Street, according to a statement from Waukegan police.

A police officer on patrol in an unmarked car was watching as Guzman pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the SUV, police claim. The SUV sped away.

The officer pursued Guzman in his patrol car, then eventually chased him until he was apprehended, police said. The handgun was recovered.

No one reported injuries or damage stemming from the shooting, police said.

Guzman of the 1500 block of North Windsor in Arlington Heights, was charged with one of count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member and aggravated discharged of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, police said.

He was ordered held at the Lake County Jail on $250,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in court Sept. 24, police said.
