Theo Williams has been named the new varsity boys basketball coach at Rich Central.

Williams’ teams pulled off some major upsets in his seven years at DuSable, especially in the state playoffs. In 2011 he guided DuSable to the super sectionals. The Panthers lost to Hillcrest by one point after being down by 22 at the half. During that run his team beat both St. Rita and St. Ignatius. The following year his team beat St. Rita and Brother Rice in the playoffs.

“It’s no big secret what I do,” said Williams. “Defense has always been a trademark of my teams. It’s the way I teach and the way I was taught. I expect my players to give 100% in the classroom as well as on the court.”

Williams was a standout player, earning All-City honors as a junior and senior playing for the legendary Larry Lewis at DuSable.

He and backcourt mate Zach Norvell were considered one of the best tandems in the Public League during their run in the late 90’s. In 1998 they lost in the semi-finals of the city playoffs to eventual state champs Young, led by Quentin Richardson, Dennis Gates and Cordell Henry.

Williams spent a year away from the game after the 2012 season to pursue other interests.

“When I was away I realize how much I really missed it,” Williams said. “I am very grateful that Rich Central has given me this opportunity to continue to do what I love. I am anxious to get started.”
