“Parks and Recreation” had a busy morning filmingscenes in downtown Chicago for its upcoming seventh and final season.
A location manager for Open 4 Business Productions confirmed Wednesday that filming for the NBC comedy wasto take place in multiplespots, including Hyde Park in the morning and possibly later in the day in Wrigleyville.
Cast members Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari and Natalie Morales were spotted by onlookers on a dreary Thursday morning near The Bean in Millennium Park and on Michigan Avenue near Trib Tower, among other places.
Once the sun came out they headed to North Avenue Beach. Late afternoon, cast and crew picked up and made their way north to Wrigleyville. (A filming notice taped to a fence outside a home near the Cubs’ ballparksaidscenes “for a TV series” will be shot on the sidewalk on the west side of Clark Street between Addison and Cornelia for about an hour between 2 and 6 p.m. Thursday.)
Illinois Film Office said the series scouted a slew of potential filming locations. @Filming_Chicago said other potential spots, based on permits, include180 N. Wabash, 401 N. Michigan, 301 S. Columbus and 201 E. Randolph.
The location manager didn’t want to get into specifics about exactly where and when the cameras will be rolling, saying “we don’t really want to publicize it.”
Chicago played a role last season in the sitcom starring Chicago-trained comic Amy Poehler as an earnest public servant in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana.
Poehler’s character, Leslie Knope, was offered a job with the National Parks Service in Chicago. First Lady and Windy City native Michelle Obama made a cameo in April’s hour-long season finale, encouraging Leslie to take the gig. Maybe the Obamas’ home in Hyde Park is the reason they’re filming on the South Side?
In the season finale, Leslie convinced her new boss to relocate the National Parks office from Chicago to her beloved Pawnee, making it look unlikely that Leslie would have a 312 or 773 area code after all. We’ll have to wait and see what brings the series — that capped off last season with atime jump three years into the future — to Chicago.
