Payton’s 6-foot-3 junior Olivia Rozmus would run through walls for her team. Only this wall didn’t budge. Rozmus crashed into a wall trying to chase down a ball during the Grizzlies’ first match at last Saturday’s Chicago Christian tournament. “We were playing on a short court because they had condensation issues with the air conditioning in the main gym,” Payton coach Joel Anderson said. Rozmus suffered a mild concussion and required stitches but is expected to be OK.
Sandburg’s Sami Knight and Julia Borschel headlined the 12-member all-tournament team at Plainfield North last weekend, which also included Rachel Burkman of Lincoln-Way North, Providence’s Emily Boggeto, Allie Lindroth of Plainfield North, Downers Grove South’s Cassie Lueken, Kendall Yerkes of Shepard, Ashley Shook of Plainfield Central, Lexi Mantas of Stagg, Daley Krage of St. Charles North, Oswego East’s Kelly Bertrand and Marian Catholic’s Dana Zavesky.
Several tournaments are on tap this weekend, including the Jacobs invitational featuring Hersey, Crystal Lake Central, Wheaton North, Cary-Grove, Rockford Boylan and the host Golden Eagles; the Geneva invitational featuring Joliet Catholic and the host Vikings; the Champaign Centennial invite with Nazareth and Plainfield North; the Conant Early Bird tournament where St. Francis and St. Charles East typically go head-to-head in the finals; and the West Aurora invite at which Glenbard South is favored.
