Off-duty Harvey police officer critically hurt in robbery

An off-duty Harvey police officer is in critical condition after he was beaten up during a robbery early Sunday near the Museum of Science and Industry.

Officer Derrick Moore, 43, was sitting in a car about 2:45 a.m. near the museum in the 5900 block of South Lake Shore Drive when a group of males walked up, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

Moore got out of the car and the group of people beat him, causing injuries to his face and head, police said. They took an unknown amount of money and property and ran away, police said.

He was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition had stabilized Sunday morning, Sedevic said.

Moore has been on the force in Harvey for five years, Harvey city spokesman Sean Howard said. He is married with four children.

“Officer Moore is a lively individual and to know that he’s here really saddens us,” Howard said at a news conference Sunday morning.
