Early Tuesday night, St. Laurence did the things it needed to do in order to compete with St. Rita, hitting outside shots and playing tough defense on its way to a 15-13 second-quarter lead.

One thing the Vikings couldn’t do, though — no matter how hard they tried — was contain Charles Matthews.

The Kentucky-bound senior knocked down contested shot after contested shot on the way to scoring 21 of his 30 points in the first half. The Mustangs closed the first half on a 19-2 blitz to take a 32-17 lead to the break and cruised to a 69-30 win in a Catholic League crossover in Chicago.
