SHARE ComEd warns customers about phone call scam

ComEd issued an alert after receiving an increase of reports about scammers calling customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless a payment is immediately made.

The impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number and other information, ComEd said in a statement.

Other times, the scammers will manipulate the caller ID number displayed on a phone so it appears that ComEd is calling, the statement said.

ComEd said customers with concerns about their bill should call customer service at (800) 334-7661.
