A shooting across one block in the Back of the Yards neighborhood left one man dead and another wounded by a stray bullet Wednesday evening, officials said.

About 6:40 p.m., a vehicle approached a 40-year-old man who was in the 5000 block of South Racine, police said. Someone got out of the vehicle and fired shots, striking the man multiple times in his chest, police said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not confirm the death at 8:45 p.m.

At the same time, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg while inside a home in the 5000 block of South Elizabeth, police said. A source said it appears the man was hit by the gunshots fired on Racine.

He was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where his condition had stabilized.
