Authorities have identified the man who was shot to death Monday evening in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

About 6 p.m., 24-year-old George Carrero was walking in the 5600 block of West Byron when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Carrero, who lived in the 3500 block of North Linder Avenue, was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
