It was a battle between two of the up-and-coming teams in the public league, but Uplift proved to be a little further along in the game as they defeated Urban Prep-West 71-61 Saturday at Whitney Young in the sweet sixteen of the public league playoffs.

The Titans (19-4) were paced by the torrid shooting of Spencer Foley who was lights out as he scored a game high of 25 points while going 9-for-11 from the floor and draining five 3-pointers. “I am a scorer,” Foley said. “I was just getting to my spots, and my teammates kept finding me. I’m glad I had a part in helping us win.”

Foley help Uplift gain leads of 14 points in the first quarter and 16 points in the second quarter. Urban (9-11) did not make a dent in the lead until late in the fourth quarter when a 6-0 spurt allowed the margin to be cut to 61-54 with 2:42 remaining in the game, but a jumper and two free throws by Foley got things back on track as the Titans closed out the game.

Pleased with the results, coach David Taylor was not happy with the play of his team down the stretch. “That’s a Red West team, and they were not going to quit and they came to play,” Taylor said.

Joining Foley in double figures was Deshon Fluckes with 12. Daniel Soetan added 11, and Jeremy Roscoe had 10 points and seven assists.

Urban Prep was paced by Steven Ross who led the Lions with 23 points, and Jaquan Johnson finished with 12.

Urban Prep coach Latroy Farrow said that there were three factors that cost his team — turnovers (18), poor free throw shooting (8 of 15) and not being aware of where #25 (Foley) was on the court. “In a game like this you pay for your mistakes.”
