The Cubs sent eight players to minor league camp Monday, reducing the size of the spring roster from 61 to 53.

Infielder Christian Villanueva and catcher Rafael Lopez were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Non-roster invitees Corey Black, Pierce Johnson, Armando Rivero, Donn Roach, Hunter Cervenka and Logan Watkins were also assigned to minor league camp.

The Cubs have 19 spring games remaining before opening the regular season against the Cardinals on April 5 at Wrigley Field.
