A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

About 12:50 p.m., Giovanni Matos was walking with two friends in the 5800 block of West Patterson when a gray, four-door car pulled up and an argument ensued between the occupants of the vehicle and Matos’ group, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Then a male exited the vehicle and fired several shots, police said.

Matos was shot in the head and his friends ran away, authorities said. The shooter jumped back in the vehicle, which sped away.

Matos, of the 5500 block of West Henderson, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

A police source said the shooting was gang-related, as gang slogans were yelled during the argument.
