Heather Mack’s trial in Indonesia delayed after baby gets sick

BALI, Indonesia — The murder trial of an American couple has adjourned after their newborn baby fell ill in the prison in Indonesia.

Tommy Schaefer, 21, and Heather Mack, 19, are being tried on charges of murdering the woman’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, whose body was found in a suitcase on a taxi on the resort island of Bali last August.

Doctor Anak Agung Gede Hartawan at Bali’s Kerobokan Penitentiary says Thursday that the couple’s 9-day-old girl is suffering jaundice and will be taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya said the sentence demand could not be read in the hearing held in the defendant’s absence on Wednesday. The Denpasar District Court decided to adjourn the trial until March 31.

They could face a firing squad if found guilty.
