Second woman dies following McKinley Park semi crash

A second woman has died following a crash involving a semi early Sunday in the McKinley Park neighborhood on the South Side.

The semi had exited northbound Interstate 55 and was turning left onto Damen about 5:20 a.m. when a 2008 Dodge sedan slammed into its trailer on the passenger side, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

Two 23-year-old women from the Dodge were both taken to Stroger Hospital and have since died, police said Tuesday.

The passenger — identified as Sonia Vargas, of the 3500 block of South Washtenaw — died at the hospital less than an hour after the crash, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The driver — Kiarah Lazo of the 5800 block of South Kildare — died at the hospital Monday evening, authorities said.

The driver of the truck was not hurt, and the police Major Accident Investigation unit is looking into the crash.
