A southbound lane of the Stevenson Expressway will close for emergency construction Friday night to repair a damaged bridge beam in southwest suburban Summit.

Weather permitting, the left lane of southbound I-55 will close between Harlem Avenue and Illinois Route 171 (1st Avenue) at 9 p.m. Friday, so that crews can begin repairing a damaged beam on the bridge carrying 1st Avenue traffic over the expressway, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A second lane will be closed at 10 p.m., along with the Harlem entrance ramp to southbound I-55, IDOT said. A detour will direct traffic south on Harlem, west on Archer Avenue and back to southbound I-55.

All lanes are expected to reopen by noon on Saturday, IDOT said.

The work is part of an upcoming reconstruction project of all bridges on southbound Illinois Route 171 between 47th Street and Archer, according to IDOT.
