A 55-year-old man died after jumping from a burning condo building Wednesday night in northwest suburban Rolling Meadows.
Someone called 911 to report the blaze in the three-story wood-frame building at 5201 Carriageway Dr. at 8:03 p.m., according to the Rolling Meadows Fire Department.
Crews found heavy smoke in the front of the building with flames on the third floor, according to a statement from the department. A man was found lying outside in the back of the building.
Kenneth Vansickle, 55, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Vansickle lived in the condo building.
An autopsy conducted Thursday found he died of multiple injuries from the fall, listing heart disease as a secondary cause.
More than 100 firefighters helped bring the fire under control by 11:52 p.m., according to the statement. Crews remained at the scene Thursday morning.
The 50-year-old building, which contains 48 condo units and a basement parking garage, sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage, but a monetary estimate was not immediately available.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal, along with the Rolling Meadows Police and Fire departments are investigating the cause of the blaze.
