Firefighters searching the Des Plaines River in the western suburbs near where a vehicle was found submerged on Sunday have discovered the body of a Chicago woman.
The vehicle was found almost entirely submerged in the river along Thatcher Avenue, just south of North Avenue in River Forest about 4:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Illinois State Police.
Police said it appeared the 2005 Silver Nissan Sentra “struck the guard rail, rolled over, and came to a rest in the river,” according to a statement from ISP.
Divers from several area fire departments entered the water and found the car unoccupied. A search of the area was unable to locate a body Sunday, though police did contact the registered owner’s family.
Rescue efforts resumed about 9:30 a.m. Monday and just after noon, the body of African American woman was retrieved from the river, police said.
She was identified as Christina N. Hill, 23, of Chicago. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday.
