Angelo Hopson | Elgin Police

A northwest suburban Elgin man accused of swallowing heroin in an attempt to hide it from police was ordered held on a $50,000 bond Thursday for multiple felony charges.

During the course of a four month investigation, 32-year-old Angelo Hopson delivered and sold heroin to an undercover officer on three separate occasions, according to a statement from Elgin police.

On Monday, police executed a search warrant at his home in the 800 block of Seminole Drive. Just before police went inside, Hopson swallowed an unknown amount of heroin in an attempt to destroy the evidence, police said.

Police said he was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was treated and released to police Wednesday.

Hopson was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church, five counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and obstructing justice, all felonies, police said.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo ordered a $50,000 bond for Hopson on Thursday morning at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, court records show. He is next scheduled to appear in court on April 20.
