Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Andrew Wiggins was named the NBA rookie of the year Thursday, with Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic finishing second.

Wiggins was the first overall pick in the NBA draft last year by Cleveland, then was traded to Minnesota in the deal that brought Kevin Love to the Cavaliers.

Wiggins averaged 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds while playing all 82 games in his first season. He received 110 first-place votes and 604 total points in the voting.

Mirotic averaged 10.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 20.2 minutes for the Bulls this season. He was an 80 percent free-throw shooter and shot better than 40 percent from the floor.

The Bulls signed Mirotic in July after spending the previous five years with Real Madrid in Spain.
