West Aurora coach Gordie Kerkman retired on Thursday. Kerkman coached the Blackhawks for 39 seasons, compiling a 805-313 record.
“I have enjoyed my experiences coaching at West High the past 53 years,” said Kerkman in a press release. “I feel however that the time has come when I must retire to live a more relaxed life. I would like to thank the administration, both past and present, the student body, faculty and community for the support you have given our basketball program”
In Kerkman’s tenure the Blackhawks won 24 regional titles, 13 sectional titles and made 11 state quarter-final appearances. The Blackhawks won five state trophies and a state championship in 2000.
