Arson investigated in NW Side fire that critically injured 4-year-old boy

Arson investigators are looking into the cause of an Irving Park neighborhood fire that left a 4-year-old boy hospitalized with second-degree burns to more than 75 percent of his body early Sunday on the Northwest Side.

The fire was reported about 3 a.m. in the 4300 block of North Drake, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight.

The boy suffered smoke inhalation and second-degree burns to more than 75 percent of his body, Knight said. He was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Two firefighters were also taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital for “minor facial and hand burns,” according to fire media. They were listed in fair-to-serious condition.

The police Bomb and Arson Unit was called to the scene to investigate, authorities said.
