Girl, 2, killed in Gary

A 2-year-old girl was killed in Gary Monday morning.

Nieyely Lopez died of “multiple blunt force traumatic injuries” she suffered at the intersection of Melton Road and Lake Street in Gary, according to a statement from the Lake County coroner’s office. She was taken to Methodists Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m.

It was not clear how Lopez, of the 1400 block of Service Street in Lake Station, sustained her injuries, but her death was ruled a homicide, according to the coroner’s office.

Gary police did not respond to a request for comment Monday night.
