A man was found dead after a fire Wednesday morning in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The man was discovered under the rubble in a second-floor living room while firefighters extinguished a blaze about 5:30 a.m. in the 3900 block of West School Street, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

The man, thought to be about 65, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Langford said the man had been hired as “some kind of watcher” as the two-unit apartment building underwent renovations.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but did not release additional details.
