A 62-year-old woman died after she was hit by a truck near her home Friday morning in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Maria Dominguez was hit about 7:20 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Grand, the same block she lived in, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy Saturday found Dominguez died from multiple injuries caused by a semi tractor truck striking a pedestrian, and her death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The truck driver, a 23-year-old man, remained at the scene after the crash, police said. He was ticketed for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian in the roadway, but police said that citation may be dropped after further investigation.

The driver told police he was traveling northbound on Laramie and turning right onto eastbound Grand when he saw what appeared to be a pile of clothes in the roadway, police said. A witness realized it was a person and flagged him down, police said. It was unknown Saturday morning why the woman was on the road.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is looking into the crash.
