Rescue workers search for Chicago man in Wisconsin River

Authorities are searching for a 21-year-old Chicago man who went missing after diving into the Wisconsin River during a family fishing trip Saturday night.

Rescue workers and local law enforcement responded to the Lower Dells on the Wisconsin River about 7:15 p.m. after receiving numerous calls of a person in the water, according to a statement from the Columbia County sheriff’s office.

The Chicago man was fishing on a rock island and tried to swim back to shore, but got caught in a strong current and went under water, the sheriff’s office said. Family and bystanders tried to rescue the man, but were unsuccessful.

Dive teams and emergency personnel worked until midnight to locate the man’s body and the following day, rescue crews used sonar equipment to locate him, but all efforts were unsuccessful, officials said.

The man’s name is not being released until additional family members are notified, the sheriff’s office said.
