A 19-year-old man died after he was shot less than two blocks south of the Chicago Police Department’s Bronzeville neighborhood headquarters Monday evening.

Robert Richmond was riding in a vehicle in the 0-100 block of East 36th Place about 5:25 p.m. when numerous shots were fired from a dark-colored vehicle, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Richmond, of the 6100 block of South King Drive, was shot in the back and driven by a family member to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:46 p.m., authorities said.

The shooting happened less than a block from Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy, located at 3663 S. Wabash.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting is gang-related because Richmond was a documented gang member, police said.
